We all want to Spread Our Wings!

Weʼre raising £5,000 to give disabled people a chance to get out and about,so they can learn new skills and meet new people. We all want to Spread Our Wings!

My name is Harvey Sayce and this is my story:
I was born with cerebral palsy; this means I have to use a motorised wheelchair to get around. I can’t drive so have to rely on others to get around. I came across Enviroability a year ago when I was 22 and looking for ways to meet new people and get out and about.

I started volunteering with Enviroability and soon became part of the team; I help in the retail shop where I enjoy talking to and serving customers. When I am at home I bag up bird seed and sell it at farmers markets. One day I thought ‘I wonder if there are other people like me who would like to get out more?’, so I talked to Enviroability about it. We came up with the idea of starting a new project called “Spread Our Wings”, using the log cabin already owned by Enviroability, where we can bag up the bird seed. This is better than doing on my own at home. This way, other people in the same situation as me, are able to get involved and get out of the house.

It’s been really important to me to get out and build my own life away from home and be more like my siblings who are growing up and moving on. I would like the same chance as them. With £5,000 we can employ a member of staff to help me get this idea growing and expanding. I would like to promote it to other organisations that support disabled people, particularly those who are just leaving school because there are few opportunities locally. This project will give them a sense of purpose and enable them to meet and work with more people.

Enviroability is a bit different to other organisations in that they wanted to help me by giving me choices about what I do. This has made me more confident and responsible in the way I am around people. It is so much better to feel you are a contributing member of the team rather than someone who needs to be there.
